Zoo & Aquarium Science
-Let’s meet Heather! Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I was a medical biller for a decade but couldn't stop daydreaming about my childhood dreams of becoming a Zoologist. So, I sold my business and started working as a tour guide at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park in California. I enrolled back into college to finish my bachelor's degree in Animal Science. I took advantage of the Zoo's tuition reimbursement program and enrolled in the Zoo & Aquarium certificate program at ABI.Â
-How did you benefit from your experience at ABI?
Many work colleagues had travelled to teaching zoos for their education, but I couldn't pick up my family and move. Nor could I afford the commute to the nearest one. ABI offered the online courses I needed, so I could successfully juggle all my responsibilities.Â
-What was your favorite course?
My favorite courses were the ones that gave me a competitive edge on my resume. Courses like Animal Nutrition and learning ZIMS.Â
-How did you complete your field experience?
My job at the Safari Park, doing tours, had me working around wildlife, but not hands-on. So, I completed my field experience at the Humane Society Project Wildlife, which is a wildlife rehabilitation center. There, I was able to learn Husbandry skills, gain mentors, and network. The animal care world is small, so meeting the right people and maintaining a good reputation is essential.Â
-What have you been doing since you graduated from ABI?
Since I've graduated, I was promoted to a leadership role in the Safari Experiences department. I also went on loan for 3 months with the Wildlife Nutrition department, where I was able to use my ABI course knowledge and gain hands-on tribal knowledge and experience. Now, it is my goal to become a Wildlife Care Specialist as soon as I finish my degree.Â
