Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’ve always been drawn to animals and have loved them ever since I can remember. I have found that one of the most rewarding parts of working in animal care is witnessing the trust that develops through patience, positive reinforcement techniques, and consistency. There is something special about watching that relationship grow over time. I have always believed that patience and kindness is the language every animal understands before you even speak a word.
How did you benefit from your experience at ABI?
ABI gave me a real foundation in animal behavior, enrichment, and training techniques that work with animals rather than against them. I learned the psychology behind these techniques, and just as importantly, how to tailor training to each individual animal rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.
What was your favorite course?
Carnivore Training and Behavior, hands down. I’ve always been drawn to carnivores — They’re often misunderstood, and that resonates with me on a deep level.
How did you complete your field experience?
I completed my field experience at The Emirates Park Zoo and Resort (United Arab Emirates), specifically in the Carnivore Division. I was exclusively involved in training the Eurasian Brown Bears, Dunya and Potap, the Spotted Hyenas, Shelby and Sidney, and our little female Fennec Fox, Mienkie. I also got to design and implement enrichment programs for the carnivores using the S.P.I.D.E.R. principles alongside the carnivore team.
What have you been doing since you graduated from ABI?
I’m currently volunteering at The Emirates Park Zoo, continuing and expanding on the work I started in my field experience.
Would you recommend ABI to others?
Most definitely, especially to other like-minded individuals. Dr. Gina and Prof. Cherie were amazing mentors throughout my time there. There is no other institute offering a comparable professional certification that translates so directly into real-life practice, like working in a zoo or aquarium environment.
