| The educational philosophy of
the Animal Behavior Institute is based on three
principles:
1)
We learn best through example. All fundamental
concepts are explained through multiple examples, including
behavioral applications, graphs, images and interactive
questions. Examples are stressed throughout course readings,
online course summaries and exercises, and all forms of
assessment.
2) Respect the individuality of each learner.
Each of us learns at our own pace, thus, coverage of material
should take place at a rate that works for us. Every student
is an individual and will experience challenges with different
components of each course. For optimal learning, students
need feedback tailored to their individual comprehension
and level of understanding. Throughout every course, students
are free to work ahead or to return to material that they
find challenging.
3) Emphasize feedback and iteration. Students
need to assess their own comprehension, receive appropriate
feedback or guidance, and be free to explore material
in new ways without fear of failing the course or being
academically penalized. Multiple vehicles for self assessment
must be available, including class forums, discussion
with instructors, directed inquiries, and interactive
quizzes.
